Press Release – New regulations to allow more yards to recycle EU vessels

published on Nov 28th, 2023

New regulations are on the horizon that could broaden the scope of ship recycling for EU vessels. The proposed amendment aims to facilitate the transfer of hazardous materials often found in ships destined for recycling to approved facilities. Under a potential new EU agreement on waste shipment regulations, EU-flagged vessels could be recycled at non-EU and non-OECD yards listed as approved.

A provisional agreement between the European Council and European Parliament would entail amending the Waste Shipment Regulation to permit international yards meeting EU standards to collaborate with companies and vessels within the Union. Danish Shipping, representing Denmark’s maritime industry, hailed this development, asserting that it would elevate standards for ship-recycling facilities globally, enhancing their appeal to EU customers.

Nina Porst, Director of Climate, Environment, and Safety at Danish Shipping, noted, “As part of our decarbonization process, an increasing number of older, less energy-efficient ships will need to be recycled. Increasing the global facility capacity for recycling ships according to the high EU safety and environmental standards is good news for all parties.”

This agreement, pending endorsement from member states of the council and the European Parliament’s environment committee, primarily addresses the shipment of plastic and hazardous waste to non-OECD countries. However, it is also viewed as a significant opportunity for the maritime industry.
